08:30 AM: The “Hanoi Hilton” (Hoa Lo Prison)
Our expert history guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel to begin the tour.
The Experience: Your first stop is the notorious Hoa Lo Prison. Originally built by the French colonists in the late 19th century to incarcerate Vietnamese political prisoners, it was later used by the North Vietnamese government to hold American Prisoners of War (POWs). Gain a profound understanding of its dark history and see where prominent figures like Senator John McCain and Pete Peterson (the first US post-war ambassador to Vietnam) were “hosted.”
10:00 AM: The Christmas Bombings (B-52 Victory Museum & Huu Tiep Lake)
Next, we move to the B-52 Victory Museum, which displays the relics and weaponry used during the intense aerial conflicts of the American War.
The Experience: Just a short walk away, hidden in a quiet residential neighborhood, you will visit Huu Tiep Lake (often referred to as B-52 Lake). Here, the twisted, rusting wreckage of an American B-52 Stratofortress bomber shot down in 1972 still lies in the shallow waters—a stark, silent monument to the war.
11:00 AM: The Leader’s Legacy (Ho Chi Minh Complex)
We continue to the Ho Chi Minh Complex, the political heart of Vietnam.
The Experience: Walk across the vast Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in 1945. You will view the imposing exterior of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the grand French-colonial Presidential Palace, and the iconic One Pillar Pagoda, a historic Buddhist temple founded in 1049. (Note: We will explore the exterior grounds only, as this is a half-day tour).
11:45 AM: The Bridge of Resilience (Long Bien Bridge)
Your final stop is the historic Long Bien Bridge (originally named Doumer Bridge). Built in 1902 by the French firm Daydé & Pillé, this steel giant spans the Red River.
The Experience: Take a walking tour along this fascinating structure. Despite being heavily bombed and severely damaged during the Vietnam War, the bridge was repeatedly repaired and still stands today as a powerful symbol of Hanoi’s resilience.
